I Turned 50 Today! Here Is Why I Still Think I Kick Ass!

Youth vs. Sales Experience

For all of you other half Centurians, we need to stick together. These up and comers with no real sales experience think we are ready to be knocked off the wall. I say to hell with that, we have what the next generation doesn’t… yet. Experience! That’s right I said the E word. When we were young and fearless, we thought experience was a code word for old people with no new ideas. While there is some truth to that, what I know today, you can’t get at Wharton, Stanford or Harvard.

I have been in the trenches 28 years figuring it out. I have traveled the world many times over and I am still as enthusiastic about gaining knowledge, new business and a great time, as ever before. When I started, I just wanted to party and get drunk in Vegas, Miami and LA on road trips. In my 30s, I was building a business and a family but getting on a plane meant I was opening new doors and my future was endless. In my 40s, as my business matured, so did I. I’d like to think I was more focused and strategic. I knew the difference between a good idea and a good business opportunity.

Your Career Must Evolve:

Now that I turned 50, my focus is starting to shift again. I have all of this experience and I want to harness it in a way to do more while  traveling less. Airports and hotels are a bitch plus the cost has just gotten out of this world! My vision for what I am doing is still crystal clear. I take less risks at 50, but the one’s I do seem to have significantly more potential. A big idea still wakes me up in the middle of the night excited. New business is still the blood that pulses through my veins.

Truth is, in my 20s, 30s, 40s and now my 50s I am and forever will be, a salesman. We can throw big titles around all we want, but as they say, I sell the shit! I am proud of that. I will not be in the Salesman Hall of Fame, there is no plaque for me in the Cooperstown of sales but here is the reality, when it comes down to it, a great salesman is the ultimate storyteller. There is no one better in the world than me.

So I guess the point of this blog is to let any of you out there that have worked with me in the past or those who I will work with in the future know, I am 50 today and I am damn proud of that. One half century old! Midlife is in my rear view mirror but I still have the will, passion and desire that I have always had. So if you think you are ready to play King of the Mountain with me, I am ready, willing and able to kick some ass… Just like I always have!
